This playhouse was inspired by the old Elitch Puppet Theatre in Northwest Denver.

After delighting adults and children alike, a collection of unique and custom-designed playhouses are nearing the end of their tour before being auctioned to raise money for the Rocky Mountain Communities, a nonprofit affordable housing developer and manager.

Starting on Friday, the Playhouse Project that features the work of 11 architects and design-build construction teams will be housed at the Streets at Southglenn for a 10-day exhibit. That will be followed by a fundraising party and the auction of the playhouses, each inspired by historic buildings and events in Colorado. Previously, the playhouses have been displayed at Stapleton and most recently at the Denver Botanic Gardens.

Each playhouse measure about 6-feet by 8-feet wide and stand stand between 10-feet and 13-feeet high. The playhouses are designed and built for Colorado’s extreme weather and with mostly re-purposed and sustainable materials. The 2011 collection of one-of-a-kind playhouses could provide hours of play for children of all ages and will also nicely fit the bill for garden art. The participating architects and contractors donated all design costs, material and labor.

Ron Faleide, principal of Faleide Architecture Studio PC, participated in the 2009 and 2010/2011 Playhouse Project said that the playhouses symbolize more than a fun place for children.

Learning about affordable housing

“The beauty of the Playhouse Project – and the reason we wanted to participate – is its power to bring home important facts to a wider audience that affordable housing can be attractive; it can increase property values; it can ease traffic; it can strengthen our communities,” Faleide said. “Most importantly, seeing children learning through playing with these playhouses is a reminder that from a good home, all things are possible.” Faleide designed the Milky Way Saloon playhouse with Palace Construction as the builder.

The playhouse exhibit runs from Friday, June 17 to June 24.  The Playhouse Auction and Family Gala is slated from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on June 25.  Both events will be in the courtyard area North of Sears at the Streets of SouthGlenn.

Streets of Southglenn a happening place

“We are thrilled to host the RMC Playhouse Project, and encourage all of our loyal shoppers to preview the playhouses.  Once you see them, you will want to take one home,”  said Megan Campbell, of Alberta Development Partners, developer of The Streets at SouthGlenn. She also put in a plug for the mixed-use development that replaced and re-invented the aging Southgleen Mall at University Boulevard and Arapahoe Road.  “We recommend that you make a day of it and visit one of the many restaurants and retail shops at the Streets at SouthGlenn. The nearby pop up fountain is a family favorite on hot summer days.”

While tickets for the Playhouse Auction and Family Gala on June 25 cost $35 each – or $60 for two and $10 for children- there is no charge to view the playhouses at The Streets at SouthGlenn from Friday to June 24.  The Playhouse Auction will be conducted by Norm Silver with help of “Mistress of Ceremonies,” Jane Monreal, CBS Channel 4 reporter.   The event begins at 4 pm, with live bidding commencing at 5 pm.  Absentee bids for any of the available playhouses will be accepted until Friday, June 17

As a non-profit, Rocky Mountain Communities’ mission is to develop, own and manage affordable housing and provide support services to help individuals succeed in life. Funds raised through the 2011 Playhouse Project support programs in health and nutrition for children and their families living in an RMC community.  Sponsors are Steele Street Bank, Colorado Housing and Finance Authority and the Denver Housing Authority.

Tickets for the Playhouse Auction and Family Gala are available for purchase at www.RockyMountainCommunities.org or by calling Kara at 303-863-8651 ext. 111.
